PLANT PRODUCTION
05/02/2018
The structure of sowing areas has not changed for longer period of time and it is dominated by cereals with a share of 58%, then 26% of fodder crops,14% of vegetables and 2% of industrial crops.
Cereal production represents the basis of food safety for the population, the most important segment of agricultural production and is most represented in the overall structure of the crop production. Of the crop cultures, the most important is the production of wheat as the most important bread wheat and corn which is the basic culture used in livestock feed.
Forage production holds second place in the production volume. In the forage production structure, about 55% of the total production is consist of green maize ( for silage), followed by legumes having a share of 16% and alfalfa 15%.
The production of industrial crops is also not negligible. In the structure of oilseed crops production, soya makes about 76% and rapeseed about 24%. Although tobacco is cultivated in BiH on a very small areas, which average about 1,700 hectares and produces about 2,300 tons of tobacco a year, it is of great importance to securing farmers' income in all breeding areas.
Vegetable production is one of the most prominent and economically most profitable branches in agriculture. In the structure of total sown areas, potatoes and vegetables have an average share of about 15%, with the proportion of potato surfaces and other vegetable species 49: 51% that goes to the benefit of larger areas sown with other vegetable species. The average domestic annual production of potatoes is about 385 thousand tons with a low average yield of around 10 tons per hectare. The average production of the most important vegetable crops is about 300 thousand tons, with the largest share of production being cabbage and kale (23%), then tomato (16%), pepper (15%), black onion (13%), cucumber (12%), and other vegetable species (22%).
Fruit production in Bosnia and Herzegovina takes place on areas that, according to the available data, are about 101 thousand ha, where about 24 million native trees are planted. The average annual fruit production is about 264 thousand tons. The level of production, fruit yield and production stability are largely influenced by the weather conditions that have changed significantly over the last few years, especially the occurrence of late spring frosts and longer dry periods. Plums (53.4%), apples (24%) and pear (10%) are most represented in fruit production, although a large number of other fruit trees are grown. The production of berries in Bosnia and Herzegovina has been experiencing strong expansion in recent years, in particular the production of raspberries and strawberries. The average production area under strawberry and raspberry is about 3 thousand acres, from which about 10,000 tons of strawberry and about 20,000 tons of raspberry can be produced on average.
The total area under vineyards is estimated at about 3,660 hectares on which 15,3 million vines have been planted, with an average yield per vine of about 2 kg.
